What is internet Telephony?

Internet telephony or VoIP (voice over internet protocol) is a technology that allows voice communication over internet. It is simmmilar to traditional telephony but has certain advantages:

• Delivery method: In landline telephony,signal is delivered to customer through a telephone line, which terminates at customer's site. The process of changing the site is a complicated procedure, moving a telephone service is only possible to another site within the same telephone network range, where a telephone line is available. Internet telephony is available in any place, where internet access is guaranteed, also abroad.
  
• Voice transmission: traditional telephony transmits analog voice signal through telephone line to standard analog telephone, which means, that it can be wiretapped quite easily. The advantage of internet telephony in that matter is converting voice into digital form, it's compression and authorization, which makes wiretapping such calls very difficult.
• Hardware: Traditional analog phone can vary in shape or colour, but basic functionality must remain the same. There are special groups of analog telephones,such as fax machines, auto-attendant devices or cordless phones, however all these devices still need to be connected to a telephone line in order to work correctly. For internet telephony one could use a PC with apropriate software installed, VoIP adapter (gateway) which allows to use current analog telephone device or IP telephone, connected directly to internet source. There is also software for mobile phones, which makes calling and receiving calls possible, whenever in range of internet access. There is plenty of solutions and new ones are still developed. In traditional telephony last revolution took place when the dial disc was replaced by keys and tone dialing was introduced.
